His theory suggested that all colors came from lightness (white) and darkness (black) and related these to the four elements \u2013 water, earth, fire, and air. Aristotle\u2019s theory held up for quite some time till it was expanded upon by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton started experimenting with light and prisms and identified the visible color spectrum as composed of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet \u2013\u00a0 a rainbow.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people today, color is something we take for granted. But centuries of research in art and science have evolved color theory as we know it in order to understand the nature and behavior of color. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, this is a brief version of the History of Color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2023\/09\/Goethe-Farbkreis-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"402\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2023\/09\/Goethe-Farbkreis-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8715\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2023\/09\/Goethe-Farbkreis-01.jpg 402w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2023\/09\/Goethe-Farbkreis-01-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important influencer to color theory was J. C. LeBlon, who shifted the path of color research away from focusing on the interaction of color and light. Kelly specifically placed this building in a spot with a lot of accessible sunlight so that the sun would hit the various stained glass windows at different intensities throughout the day therefore highlighting the multiple tones a single color can embody just by changing the light reflected through them.\u00a0<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" class=\"wp-image-6280\" style=\"width: 510px\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorHistory_Kelly.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorHistory_Kelly.jpg 720w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorHistory_Kelly-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So why is it important to learn about the history of color? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Design Student Technology Assistant, learning about color theory, how it works, and how it was developed will allow you to develop your own perspective and understand how to better apply color into your designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Theory<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Color theory is a guideline that designers use to determine which colors look good together, and why. There are 3 main ways a hue can be manipulated: tint, tone, and shade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tint<\/strong>: A tint will make any hue look brighter. Tinting can be done by adding small percentages of white to an existing hue. Eventually adding 100% tint will turn the color pure white.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shade<\/strong>: A shade will make any hue look darker. Shading can be done by adding small percentages of black to an existing hue. Eventually adding 100% shade will turn the color pure black.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tone<\/strong>: A tone will mute any hue or dull it. Toning can be done by adding small percentages of gray to an existing hue. These three are known as <strong>achromatic<\/strong> colors because they lack a hue to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, there is no way you can get these three colors as a result of mixing other colors like you could with secondary and tertiary colors. These three colors are only defined by the presence or absence of light in them. Conversely, the rest of the hues are called <strong>chromatic<\/strong> colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Wheel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Color wheels are very self-explanatory in theory, but they do more than just display colors in a circular manner. Color wheels are excellent tools to visualize the composition of colors and how they interact with each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, there are various types of color wheels. There are <strong>different primary colors of light and pigment<\/strong>; respectively these are <strong>additive<\/strong> and <strong>subtractive<\/strong> colors. Each produces varying secondary colors of their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different color wheels and slightly different color theory is required for different formats of media such as lighting, print, and digital. You can see this in the example below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"344\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorTheory_Primaries.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6284\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorTheory_Primaries.jpg 640w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/03\/ColorTheory_Primaries-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>An <strong>additive<\/strong> primary color wheel (<strong>RGB<\/strong>) is mostly used in projects involving a screen to display images; think of a television, a projector or a phone\/tablet\/laptop\/computer. This primary color palette is unique because <strong>light<\/strong> intervenes with our perception of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>subtractive<\/strong> primary color wheel (<strong>CYMK<\/strong>) is mostly used in printing projects. This primary color palette is unique because <strong>pigment<\/strong> intervenes with our perception of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Ex. If you use an RGB color wheel to determine the colors you&#8217;ll use for a project, you will get a wider variety of hues for you to use (due to its additive nature). Value is the color&#8217;s lightness or darkness in relation to black and white. Once a color is defined, the scheme can be formed by using the hue and its tints, shades, and tones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Advantages<\/span><\/em>: A monochromatic scheme reduces distraction and prevails color harmony. They ask for your help in choosing a color palette that reflects their mission to \u201cunderstand the daily lives, resistance, exploitation, and rebellions within Mexican Americans and Chican@\/xs in the United States.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#x1f5dd; = Popular colors and their meanings can vary by culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: Recalling what you learned from The Meaning of Color, pick a single color to begin the color scheme for the first situation and answer the following questions on Basecamp:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What meanings or values is that color usually associated with?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which one of those meanings\/values is the reason you chose this color?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If originally undecided, which other colors did you have in mind to be the dominant color? What made you consider them? Why didn\u2019t you pick those?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which type of color scheme are you considering making? (monochromatic, analogous, complementary\u2026) Why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will you focus on hues or will you modify the color\u2019s tint, shade or tone? Which one and why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong>: Once your color and plan are approved, choose between 2 and 5 more colors to complete the color scheme (there should be 3-6 colors, total depending on your vision). Post a picture of your final color scheme on Basecamp for feedback or approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4<\/strong>: Repeat all necessary steps for the other two situations.
