When you\u2019re on a website, your browser sends a request to the web server and the server sends back the requested document. MAMP is a free, local server environment that can be installed under macOS and Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will mostly be using MAMP to develop sites and use CMS on your local computer. In other words, it will allow you to run a personal copy of a website on your own computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1 &#8211; Launch MAMP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the MAMP application on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"520\" height=\"146\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_1.png 520w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_1-300x84.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: be sure to click on MAMP and not MAMP Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If MAMP has not been installed on your machine, ask a STA manager to download and install it for you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For students working remotely on their own machine:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mamp.info\/en\/downloads\/\">https:\/\/www.mamp.info\/en\/downloads\/<\/a> and download the recommended version of MAMP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the application in your downloads folder and follow the installation wizard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2 &#8211; Navigating MAMP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"831\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_2-1024x831.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7481\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_2-1024x831.png 1024w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_2-300x243.png 300w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_2-768x623.png 768w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_2.png 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will first want to pay attention to the <strong>Document Root<\/strong>. The Document Root refers to where all of your website files are stored on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"831\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_3-1-1024x831.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7487\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_3-1-1024x831.png 1024w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_3-1-300x243.png 300w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_3-1-768x623.png 768w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_3-1.png 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The default Document Root for MacOS is \u201c\/Applications\/MAMP\/htdocs\u201d. For Windows it\u2019s \u201c\/MAMP\/htdocs\u201d. It is recommended that you change this, which we will go over in a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the upper right corner is the <strong>Start button.<\/strong> This button controls whether the server is running or off. While the server is running, you will be able to open and access locally stored sites on your browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever you want to stop working on your site or logging off for the day, be sure to click <strong>Stop<\/strong> so that the server is not running unnecessarily in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"831\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_4-1024x831.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7484\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_4-1024x831.png 1024w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_4-300x243.png 300w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_4-768x623.png 768w, http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/kb\/files\/2021\/09\/change_doc_root_4.png 1060w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3 &#8211; Changing the Document Root<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time you want to open a specific site stored on your computer, you will need to change the Document Root to specify where the relevant folder and files are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended that you store all of your files in an organized folder that isn\u2019t the default. For example, designating a folder called \u201cWEB DEV\u201d or \u201cMAMP\u201d. In the future, this folder can include downloaded CMS packages like WordPress and Grav.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For students working in the office on LAITS machines:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place the your document root folder in your designated STA folder in the LAITS file server. If you need instructions on how to access the server, click here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For students working remotely on your own machine:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feel free to keep this folder wherever you\u2019d like.
