Mel Hinich was a professor of political science and economics at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was the Mike Hogg Professor of Local Government.<\/p>\n

Mel’s tragic death brings to an end one of the truly innovative and productive careers in academics.\u00a0 He was the very definition of a polymath, having made seminal contributions to multiple fields of study.<\/p>\n

But he was so much more: one of the most interesting and stimulating people ever, an exacting critic of the academy and, yes, curmudgeonly.<\/p>\n
