{"id":218,"date":"2008-07-23T12:01:06","date_gmt":"2008-07-23T17:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/persian_online_resources\/?page_id=218"},"modified":"2009-05-04T11:38:12","modified_gmt":"2009-05-04T17:38:12","slug":"how-to-type-in-persian","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.la.utexas.edu\/persian_online_resources\/how-to-type-in-persian\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Type In Persian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to type in Persian text to supplement your work on this website, you will need to set up your computer for multiple languages.<\/p>\n<p>On MAC OS X:<br \/>\nGo to System Preferences, then to International.\u00a0 Then go to Input Menu tab.\u00a0 From there, select the &#8220;Persian&#8221; checkbox, and &#8220;Allow a different input source for each document&#8221; then &#8220;Show input menu in menu bar.&#8221;\u00a0 Then, you will be able to select English or Persian to type in and switch back and forth easily.<\/p>\n<p>On Windows XP:<br \/>\nChoose Control Panel and then Regional and Languages Options.\u00a0 Click on the Languages tab.\u00a0 Check Install files for Persian.\u00a0 Click Apply, and the files will install.\u00a0 In the Input Language menu choose Persian.\u00a0 In the Keyboard layout menu choose the keyboard you want to use (note:\u00a0 there are Persian keyboards available, or also, stickers that can be placed over an English language keyboard to make it Persian from commercial providers).\u00a0 Click on the Language Bar button.\u00a0 If the Language Bar button is grayed out, click on Key Settings.\u00a0 Check Show language bar on desktop.\u00a0 Click OK and Apply whenever you are prompted, and restart the computer.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a sample keyboard for typing in Persian:<\/p>\n<p>[img persian_online_resources frame]PersianKBLayout.jpg[\/img]<\/p>\n<p>Then, you will be able to select English or Persian to type in and switch back and forth easily.<\/p>\n<p>We also recommend that you use a basic text editor, such as the default programs that come with your operating system (TextEdit, WordPad, Notepad, etc.), not Microsoft Word, for writing and reading Persian on your personal computer.\u00a0 While Microsoft Word works well in Persian with PC systems, it does not transfer nor work on a MAC platform, meaning that documents that you create on a PC in Word are not easily portable to other systems.\u00a0 For most situations, use the Times New Roman font.\u00a0 While the Tahoma font will also display the characters, it is not optimal for capturing the exact details and script-like flow of Persian text.\u00a0 If you are able to manually choose character encoding, either in e-mail or in your word processing programs\u00a0 UNICODE &#8211; 8 or UTF-8 is the best choice for Persian.\u00a0 The free, online <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\">Google Docs<\/a> service appears to support and share Persian and other right-to-left languages relatively well, but can be slow for actual document creation.\u00a0 It might be best to create documents in a text file and then upload them for editing, formatting, and sharing.\u00a0 You need to establish a personal account with Google to use it &#8211; use it at your own risk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to type in Persian text to supplement your work on this website, you will need to set up your computer for multiple languages.
