This week, I hosted my colleague Prof. Michael Szurawitzki (University of Regensburg, Germany) at the University of Texas. He consulted with the Texas German Dialect Project and gave a talk on German-Language Exile Periodicals in Shanghai.

The Texas German Dialect Project, which I founded in 2001, is turning 25 years old! The magazine Life and Letters of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin publishes an article Texas Deutsch ist einzigartig (‘Texas German is unique’) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary of the TGDP.

Last year, I was interviewed for a show on Texas German. More recently, parts of my interview appeared in the show The Last Texas Germans on Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan. See here for the video.

Today, my wonderful academic home department of the last 25 years, the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, will cease to exist. Per orders from university leaders, it is being merged with two other units, the Department of French and Italian and the Department of Slavic Studies, into a new unit called the Department of European and Eurasian Studies.
