Past and present stems of Persian verbs are different. Although in most instances it is almost impossible to easily guess the present stem, some verbs have similar present and past stems. The following can help in guessing and remembering some of the regularly predictable present stems.

For most verbs ending in idan, remove the idan from the past stem, and then add[tag resources presentstem_01] می [/tag] mito the beginning. For example, for the verb “to laugh,” change the infinitive[tag resources presentstem_02] خندیدن [/tag] xandidan to[tag resources presentstem_03] خند [/tag] xand and then add [tag resources presentstem_04] می [/tag] mi to make[tag resources presentstem_05] میخند [/tag] mixand. To these, add present tense personal endings as follows:

For most verbs ending in andan, remove an from the infinitive and then add[tag resources presentstem_12] می [/tag]to the beginning. For example, for the verb ‘to dig’, change the infinitive[tag resources presentstem_13] کندن [/tag] kandan to[tag resources presentstem_14] کند [/tag] kand and then add[tag resources presentstem_15] می [/tag]to make[tag resources presentstem_16] میکن [/tag] mikan. To this, add present tense personal endings. Other verbs in this category include راندن, خواندن, and ماندن.

For verbs, the final vowel of which before the infinitival ending is u, remove udan at the end of the infinitive and add ‘a’. Then add[tag resources presentstem_17] می [/tag]to the beginning. For example, for the verb ‘to rob’, change the infinitive ربودن robodan to میربا, then add the personal endings. Other verbs in this category include ستودن sotodan ‘to admire’ and گشودن
gošudan ‘to open’.

For many verbs with the infinitival ending shidan, remove shidan and then add[tag resources presentstem_18] می [/tag]to the beginning. For example, for the verb ‘to boil’, change the infinitive[tag resources presentstem_19] جوشیدن [/tag] jušidan to[tag resources presentstem_20] جوش [/tag] juš and then add[tag resources presentstem_21] می [/tag]to make[tag resources presentstem_21] میجوش[/tag] mijuš. To this add present tense personal endings. Other verbs in this category include پاشیدن, پوشیدن, تراشیدن, and کوشیدن.
