Prepositions

In Persian, prepositions precede the indirect object of the sentence, while the direct object is always followed by را ra:

from, of az از
with با
above, over bar بَر
to, towards be به
in, into, at, inside, over at dar دَر
colloquial, in, inside toy-e (توی)
for barāy-e برای
on, over, on top of ruy-e روی
colloquial, on, over, on top of ru (رو)
under, underneath zir زیر
over, on top of, above bālāy-e بالای
until, till, so that, up to, as far as تا
after(wards) ba’d az بعداز
before qabl az قبل از
except qeer az غیر از
about, regarding, concerning rāje’ be راجع به
about, regarding, concerning dar bārey-e درباره ی

او از مدرسه به خانه آمد
u az madrese be xāne āmad
“He came home from school.”
من با پدرم به خانه رفتم
man bā pedaram be xāne raftam
“I went home with my father.”
مادرش در خانه بود
mādaraš dar xāne bud
“His/her mother was home.”
من برای او یک کتاب خریدم
man barāy-e u yek ketāb xaridam
“I bought him/her a book.”
مداد روی تلویزیون است
madād ruy-e televizyon ast
“The pencil is on the television.”
دفترت زیر میز است
daftarat ruy-e miz ast
“Your notebook is under the table.”
از اینجا تا آنجا
az injā tā ānjā
“From here to over there.”
آن گل بالای در است
ān gol bālāy-e dar ast
“That flower is on top of the door.”
او بعد از تو آمد
u ba’d az to āmad
“He/she came after you did.”
من قبل از او رفتم
man qabl az u raftam
“I went before him/her.”
همه غیر از جمشید رفتند
hame γeyr az jamšid raftand
“They all left except for Jamshid.”
این کتاب راجع به ایران است
in ketāb rāje’ be irān ast
“This book is about Iran.”
این کتاب درباره‌ی ایران است
in ketāb dar bārey-e irān ast
“This book is about Iran.”

As we can see, some of these prepositions take the ezāfe construction, such as برای, روی, زیر, and بالای.
