Simple Sentences

Writing from right to left, the simplest sentence structure is as follows:

verb subject
رفتم من
raftam man
من رفتم
man raftam
‘I went’

The verb is always placed at the end of the sentence.

A more complex sentence may include a combination of nouns, adjectives or adverbs as the subject of the sentence, and a more complex predicate. For instance, it might include adjectives, prepositions, elements of time and place, and many more such items as extra information.

verb adjective subject
هستم خوشحال من
hamstam xošhāl man
‘am’ ‘happy’ ‘I’
من خوشحال هستم
man xošhāl hamstam
‘I am happy’
verb object/place preposition subject
رفتم مدرسه به من
raftam madrese be man
‘went’ ‘school’ ‘to’ ‘I’
verb object/place preposition time subject
رفتم مدرسه به دیروز من
raftam madrese be diruz man
‘went’ ‘school’ ‘to’ ‘yesterday’ ‘I’
من دیروز به مدرسه رفتم
man diruz be madrese raftam
‘I went to school yesterday’

The element of time and the subject of the sentence may switch places:

verb object/place preposition subject time
رفتم مدرسه به من دیروز
raftam madrese be man diruz
‘went’ ‘school’ ‘to’ ‘I’ ‘yesterday’
من دیروز به مدرسه رفتم
man diruz be madrese raftam
‘I went to school yesterday’ ‘yesterday, I went to school’

The element of place should be the closest to the verb, at the end of the sentence; that is, immediately before the verb. If there are any explanations or attributes regarding the element of place, they may intervene between place and the verb:

verb object/place preposition time subject
رفتم مدرسه به دیروز من
raftam madrese be diruz man
‘went’ ‘school’ ‘to’ ‘yesterday’ ‘I’
من دیروز به مدرسه رفتم
man diruz be madrese raftam
‘I went to school yesterday’
